Which is the Best Sun Cream for Kids?

Which is the Best Sun Cream for Kids?! Since becoming a Mummy I’ve gone from ooo-ing and aahh-ing over the latest designer bag to ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over child friendly delights such as bottles of sun cream. Which rubs in the best, which comes top on the nasty-free scale, which lasts the longest? Which is the most exciting colour?

Our little adventurers have much more delicate skin that we do, and need good UV protection at all times during the summer. Here are our Best Sun Creams for Kids, all available from the UK high street:

1. Soltan Once. Kids 3 hours water play, hypoallergenic, SPF50, 200ml. £10 in Boots

Why we love it:

Soltan Once is the go to holiday sun cream in our household. It’s USP is that it provides 6 hours of sun protection from one use, 3 hours if you’re going in the pool. This means that sun cream doesn’t need to be applied multiple times to wriggly children! It is quite thick and takes some rubbing in, but the plus side of this is that you can see clearly where it has been applied. Whilst one bottle retails at £10, it’s often on 2 for 1 so it’s a great value product, which is also hypoallergenic for kids with sensitive skin.

2. Garnier Ambre Solaire Kids Anti Sand Spray. SPF50, 200ml. £7 in Boots.

Why we love it:

We know, it had you at Anti-sand! There’s nothing worse than a grumpy toddler covered in sticky, sandy, sun-cream, and now this is a problem of the past. This sun cream is so quickly absorbed and non-sticky that you could roll in sand 30 seconds after application and be completely sand-free. Wow! It’s water resistant too but will need re-applying after a couple of hours.

3. Solait Kids Roll On. SPF50, 75ml. £2.99 in Superdrug.

Why we love it:

This one is the perfect out-and-about sun cream. It’s a hand-bag sized gem, cheap and cheerful, and fun too because not only is it roll-on but it comes out green for even coverage. Kids adore it.

4. Nivea Sun Kids Moisturising Sun Trigger Spray. SPF50, 300ml. £6.00 in Tesco.

Pow Pow!…That’s literally the secret of this sun cream. It comes in a wonder bottle which kids love to shoot, making application much more fun. It’s family-sized, provides excellent coverage and is water resistant too.

5. Child’s Farm. SPF50, 100ml. £8.84 in Waitrose.

Why we love it:

This beautiful, natural sun cream made our list for being particularly kind. It’s free from parabens, mineral oils and artificial colours, so great for really sensitive skin. It also works a little differently from other sun creams: it contains Titanium dioxide which reflects away damaging UVA and UVB rays away from the skin. It does take a little time to rub in, but it’s worth it as full coverage is easily achieved.

Once you’ve chosen your favourite cream, remember to slop it on a good 20-30 minutes before venturing outside. On a really sunny day, it’s always a good idea to wear a hat and keep in the shade between the hours of 11 and 3. Wishing you all many safe, happy and memorable days in the sun.
